The Cellist by Dermot Flynn, is a line drawing style illustration of a cellist (cello player) wearing a tux and bowtie. The drawing is full of energy as the cellist plays with vigarous passion!
When Dermot first moved to London in 2003, he was doing as much as he could to get out and meet people and try things that for one reason or another he never did while growing up and living in Dublin.
One of these projects was going through a ‘phase’ of learning to play the Cello. Dermot was in a ‘late starter’ orchestra in East London. Having learned the piano from the age of 7, heI thought that it would be a breeze but soon learned that this wasnt the case, admitting, “Mostly the sounds I made were just awful.”
The Cellist comes from a set of illustrations that Dermot created whilst trying to visualise how he WANTED to look and sound while playing the cello. At the time he was living in east London and used to practice late into the night, p***ing off numerous sets of neighbours whose life he made into a living hell.
Training and working as a teacher soon put to his ambitions of being a ‘late starter’ musician. The cello (which is actually a really nice one) is still sitting at home in his attic….
